I recently went on two hens and plan to share a little in this post (what I can) of what we got up to and my top hen destinations for any bride-to-be looking for an escape in Europe for a few nights.
One of the hens was in fact my own hen… and yes it was epic! I was a little cautious as the last hen I went on I ended up in hospital after a nasty fall in a club and ended up off work for 6 weeks unable to walk or move! When someone says ‘have a drink… what’s the worst that can happen’… well there you go … think I answered that.
Destination number one has got to be my hen location to Budapest, Hungary. My hen began with the announcement of my ‘surprise’ location … which never stays as a surprise there is always one who lets it slip but I was super excited and happy regardless! We had the best location with the beautiful Gozsdu apartments, in a city that’s perfect for stags and hens.
Activities included a life drawing class with a glass of bubbly. I love art and I was completely in my element, however think others may have given up after 10 minutes into the class. We also did a cruise along the river with pretty strong cocktails which was perfect for the sightseeing part of the hen as usually there isn’t much time for that. We had a lovely posh meal at Buddha-Bar Restaurant followed by the best night out with a VIP package and dance off with a stag party at a place called Peaches and Cream.
Hvar is one of the most beautiful gems in Europe that I've been to and is more than just a hen destination. The scenic beauty of Croatia and quirky town make this an ideal getaway with friends or family. We probably had the best location for our hotel and it was actually quite beautiful inside – Hvar Palace hotel. It is literally in the centre of the town with all the bars, restaurants, fort and harbour on our doorstep.
The hen was a lot more chilled out and we got to live a life of luxury with a private boat day excursion (which we referred to as a yacht – but it was a boat). We were fortunate enough to have access to Amfora Hotel's pool and private beach for the perfect day to lay like sloths on the sun loungers and soak up some sun. We all know how deprived we are of a British summer.
I was in charge of t-shirts and caps and boy did I deliver (if I say so myself). We had the coolest trucker caps with ‘Bride’s Bae’ and one with ‘Bride’ for my cousin. We also dressed up as Greek goddesses with Style Savita Indian Hair Accessories to Carpe Diam, an Island party just 10-minute boat ride away from Hvar City, which was really chilled out.
I think there is one destination that’s only got bigger and better each year – and that is Ibiza. I went a few years back with friends and did the big club scenes – Amnesia, Pacha, Space and Privilege. However, since then, there are many new beach clubs and pool parties for the day-time clubbers - where all the cool kids and celebs hang out and here’s a few of them:
- Ocean Beach Club
- Amante Beach Club
- Cotton Beach Club
- Blue Marlin Beach Club
- Ushuaia Ibiza Beach Hotel
- Jockey Club Salinas
The beach and pool parties are perfect for rocking temporary gold henna tattoos, which last for a good few days even through water contact!
I went to Madrid for my first ever hen for my cousin in 2009 and I really had no idea what to expect. It definitely raised the bars for all hens to come and remember screaming ‘this is the best hen I’ve ever been on’ – note it was the only hen I’d ever been on! We stayed in beautiful quirky Spanish apartments, in a great location too.
We did the usual hen activities which required dancing in heels, hen games and a themed night out – in Moulin Rouge style burlesque. There is one club that we still talk about today called Serrano 41 which was definitely our favourite night out with the best music for hip hop and RnB lovers.
The final spot on my top 5 hen destinations is Lisbon, Portugal. We went in February 2013 as a group of 17 girls! Yes - 17! Thankfully I wasn’t chief organiser but we had such a fab time with cocktail making classes and a treasure hunt which was actually really fun. Two teams competing to find items across town, running about kind of like we were on The Apprentice, but there was no winning prize or Alan Sugar in a board room. Our apartments were huge which we would need to fit 17 girls and the rooms were tastefully decorated. I really should have done an MTV Cribs style video but here’s a few snaps instead:
